Tours
Visits to LPP-network libraries provide a first-hand look at LPP’s impact on young children, families, and communities and often take place in locations that participants would not otherwise be likely to visit. Participants get a deeper understanding of the community through conversations (translation provided) with community leaders, parents and library managers. The highlight of the visit is sitting down to read with the children who are eager to show and read from their favorite books. Comfortable, secure transportation is provided.
Thursday, December 18 – Santiago Matatlán
Discover Tlacolula Valley: A Day of Books, Culture, and History. Join us for an inspiring visit to the town’s municipal library and see firsthand how this LPP-supported space enriches the lives of local children. Since 2019, the library has provided 636 LPP-donated books and welcomes an average of 174 visits each month. During our visit, children will read with us one-on-one. Then, we’ll step across the street to explore Tlacolula’s exceptional community museum for a guided tour (translation provided) to learn about the region’s most important archaeological discoveries and the role of mezcal in Zapotec culture. You’ll be impressed by the museum’s remarkable collection of historical photographs and pre-Hispanic relics. We’ll end the day by gathering for a delicious lunch at a nearby restaurant (Lunch and museum entrance not included).
Friday, January 16 - Asunción Ocotlán
Join us to visit this LPP-supported school library located just one-hour south of Oaxaca center. In 2024 LPP helped to inaugurate this FIRST AND ONLY library ever opened in this underserved community by delivering 200 donated books. Housed within a local high school, this vibrant space serves readers from 5 to 12 years. On this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to sit side-by-side with children as you read together and to talk with dedicated educators about what this new library means for the community and young children. We’ll also learn about their “mobile library” and other innovative reading promotion activities. Join us and witness firsthand how books are transforming the lives of hundreds of children — one story at a time!
Wednesday, January 28 – San José del Progreso – Ocotlan
Join us in celebrating the inauguration of our partnership with the library at the “Amado Nervo” Elementary School, located an hour south of Oaxaca City. This is the only library serving this underserved community. San José del Progreso – Ocotlán is known for its silver wealth and the artistry of its openwork embroidered garments. The new library will offer books and reading activities for 480 children. We’ll have the chance to read with young students, watch as cartons containing 200 new books are opened, participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and speak with local educators.
Wednesday, February 18, 2026 - “Rodolfo Morales” primary school, San Antonio de la Cal
Would you like to see firsthand how, in less than a year, a Libros Para Pueblos–supported library has become a vibrant hub of reading for 269 primary school children? Last February, LPP helped inaugurate the school’s first dedicated library space with 200 donated books, music, and puppetry. Up to that time, the school used only a “mobile library” cart that circulated from classroom to classroom. During our visit, the children will read to us from their favorite books. We’ll also observe classroom reading activities and speak with teachers about their goals and challenges. Don’t miss this opportunity for an insider’s look at a traditional neighborhood school in action.
Friday, March 13, 2026-San Pedro Apóstol Ocotlán
This tour to “Narciso Mendoza” Elementary School in the community of San Pedro Apostol Ocotlán, will give you an “insider visit” to a small town of 1,700 residents, 50 minutes south of Oaxaca City. The children will read one-on-one with tour participants, and we’ll talk with the local educators about challenges and goals for young readers in the community. We´ll have lunch at the school cafeteria.
An 850-peso donation is requested. Tour is limited to 13 participants, so early registration is recommended.
