Tours

Visits to LPP-network libraries provide a first-hand look at LPP’s impact on young children, families, and communities and often take place in locations that participants would not otherwise be likely to visit. Participants get a deeper understanding of the community through conversations (translation provided) with community leaders, parents and library managers. The highlight of the visit is sitting down to read with the children who are eager to show and read from their favorite books. Comfortable, secure transportation is provided.

Upcoming Libros Para Pueblos library visits

Tuesday, February 18 - “Luis Donaldo Colosio” primary school, San Antonio de la Cal

Last year LPP inaugurated partnership with this school library, now one of the highest performing members of the LPP network. Located 35 minutes from Oaxaca Centro, this library serves more than 430 children. They have incorporated the SENTIR storybooks which address emotional issues facing children, as well as the “Creative Writing for Children” program using skills learned in the recent 20-hour online workshop for library managers. The children will present an original puppet show based on a storybook in their collection; then we’ll talk with the teachers about educational activities, goals, and challenges of this community. We´ll have lunch at the school cafeteria.

Friday, March 7 – “Rodolfo Morales” primary school, San Antonio de la Cal (Inauguration Ceremony)

Join us on our final library visit of the season as we inaugurate the opening of the primary school library that will serve 290 students. Until now, the school lacked a prepared space and instead used a mobile cart to move a small collection of books from classroom to classroom. Be part of the event when all that changes, as students open cartons containing 200 books provided by LPP and then shelve the collection in their newly created library. Children will read with us one-on-one, and we’ll observe reading activities in classrooms. The visit will culminate in theater presentation by 4th-grade students of “Es usted una Bruja.” The parents’ collective will prepare lunch in the cafeteria.

An 850-peso donation is requested for each tour.

Tours are limited to 14 participants, so early registration is recommended.
