Puppetry

The annual donation of 100+ books to each library -made possible by sponsors- provides the raw materials for promoting the joy of reading. LPP also conducts training in reading promotion strategies to bring alive and amplify the reading experience. These activities include storytelling, read-aloud, arts and crafts – and puppetry.

The use of puppets in education and literacy programs is well documented and has a fascinating history in Mexico, both in the indigenous oral narration traditions and then, in 1921, when the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) launched a national rural education and literacy program.

In the fall of 2022, LPP enlisted the participation of two master puppeteers to develop a program that would use puppets to encourage greater reading from the libraries´ collections, deepen comprehension, and stimulate curiosity. The pilot program visited five libraries, including school, municipal, and mobile libraries located in the urban markets, and held presentations attended by more than 1,500 children, parents and teachers.

In 2023, LPP visited 15 libraries in its network to conduct presentations and puppet-making workshops.
